Search prop firm vs broker and you get the same thumbnail: a $100k “funded” badge next to a MetaTrader login. They are not the same product. A prop (proprietary) shop usually sells an evaluation — fee in, rulebook, then a simulated or tightly-limited live book if you pass. A forex broker holds a client deposit on a named legal entity. Peak Pips does not rank “best prop firm 2026”. This note is who holds the money when the ads look identical.
What each product is built to do
A forex broker (the kind on our shortlist) takes a deposit, shows a ticket, and — if the PDF is honest — lets you withdraw under a policy you can read: withdrawal policy. Licence homework still comes first: what a licence covers and register steps. Minimums are a door, not a safety rating — minimum deposit.
A prop firm usually charges for a challenge: profit target, max daily loss, consistency rules, news blackouts. Passing does not mean the firm wired six figures into an account you own. Payouts, if they exist, sit on their PDF: split, delay, denied-trade lists. Many books are demo-like until a later step. That is not automatically a scam and it is not a broker. A clone with a “instant fund” form is still a clone — how to spot one.
Where people mix them up
- Who is on the contract. Broker: the company on the live application. Prop: often a different shop, sometimes using a broker as the backend. Two PDFs, two failures.
- What you can withdraw. Broker: your remaining cash, minus costs, if the desk pays. Prop: a share of “profit” after rules. The evaluation fee is often gone either way.
- Leverage theatre. A 1:100 challenge lot is not the same risk as 1:100 on your $500 broker ticket — leverage and margin. Copy trading sits in a third bucket: forex copy trading.
- Cost while you “pass”. Spreads and commissions still eat the challenge. Write the round-turn: spread vs commission. A demo pass is not a live payout — demo vs live.
Four lines to copy before you pay a fee or fund an account
- Product name. Evaluation, instant fund, or client CFD account. If the landing page uses all three, stop.
- Entity. Legal name on the payment receipt and on the trading login. Search it. Same logo is not the same rulebook.
- Payout vs withdrawal. Broker: methods, fees, KYC holds. Prop: when a split is paid, in what currency, and which trades get voided.
- What dies first. Daily loss limit, trailing drawdown, news window. That is a fail condition, not a stop you chose.
If the job is actually a broker
Start with how to choose a broker and the regulated shortlist. Line two names up on compare brokers. A prop badge does not replace that sequence. Peak Pips may list live partner desks elsewhere — that still does not make a challenge a client account.
Where Peak Pips stands
We research broker-style products: licences, typical costs, platforms, withdrawals. We will not publish a live “easiest 100k challenge” table, and we will not sell a signal room that “passes for you”. If a page cannot say whether you are a client or a candidate, leave it. Leveraged CFDs and challenge rules can both zero the money you sent. Risk disclaimer.
Common question
If I pass a prop firm, do I have a forex broker account? Usually no. You have a contractual right to a split under their rules, on a book they control. A broker account is a deposit you can try to withdraw as cash. Read the PDF on the name you paid. If the only document is a leaderboard, you have not been shown either product.
