A BTCUSD (or BTCUSD.a) symbol next to EURUSD on MetaTrader is usually a bitcoin CFD: you trade a price with leverage. You typically do not receive coins, a wallet address, or an on-chain withdrawal. The broader split is in crypto CFDs vs buying the coin. This note is the BTC ticket: contract size, weekend close, and what to copy before you size it like gold.
What the BTCUSD spec usually hides
Forex-style bitcoin CFDs are not “1 BTC = 1 lot” everywhere. Some desks use 1 lot = 1 coin; others use 0.01 or a dollar-notional contract. Tick size is often $0.01 or $1, not a four-decimal pip. Confirm the contract the same way you would for XAUUSD — gold account checks and pip value and lot size. Mixing a 1.00 lot gold habit with a 1.00 lot BTC spec is how a small account dies on a normal Tuesday.
Copy the legal entity on the account form and search it — register steps. Same logo, different country, different BTC list (or no BTC at all) is normal. MT4 vs MT5 still matters only if the symbol actually exists on the platform you will click.
Weekend, funding, and the gap
Spot bitcoin trades all week. Many retail CFD desks pause or widen over the weekend, then gap at Monday’s open. A tight stop that worked on Friday can fill far away. Overnight / weekend funding can dwarf the spread if you hold. Write the round-turn like any other CFD: spread vs commission. A demo will not show a payout — demo vs live.
Leverage on an already violent market
BTC already moves several percent without a news candle. A leveraged bitcoin CFD still has margin and stop-out — how an account goes to zero. Negative balance rules, if they exist, are entity-specific: NBP note. Credit from a welcome bonus can keep a loser open longer. That is not a gift on a gap.
Fiat out, not coins out
You fund in currency. You withdraw in currency, if the desk pays. There is no “send BTC to hardware wallet” button on a typical forex CFD ticket. Read withdrawal policy before you treat a green P&L as cash. A clone with a BTC chart is still a clone — how to spot one.
Where Peak Pips stands
We research broker-style products: licences, typical costs, platforms, withdrawals. We are not a wallet, not an exchange, and not a signal room. We will not tell you bitcoin “goes up”. Start with what a licence covers and the regulated shortlist if the job is FX and gold; line two names up on compare brokers if you even need a second ticket. If a review cannot say whether BTCUSD is a CFD, stop. How to choose a broker still comes before a crypto symbol. Risk disclaimer: leveraged bitcoin CFDs can result in the loss of your capital.
Common question
If I buy a bitcoin CFD at my forex broker, can I withdraw BTC? On a typical CFD, no. You have a price position in the firm’s book. Close the ticket and you get currency (if withdrawals work), not coins. If ownership of bitcoin is the point, you need a product that delivers the asset — and a firm you can verify — not a chart labelled BTCUSD.
